You opened Claude this morning and something was missing. The little Chat and Cowork buttons under the message box are gone, and you are not sure whether you lost a feature or gained one. Nothing broke. The Claude Chat and Cowork merge landed on 16 September 2026, and it is reaching accounts gradually, so your colleague may still see the old layout while you do not.

What actually changed

Until now you had to decide before you started. Chat was for asking things. Cowork was for work that involved your files, ran longer, and did something rather than answered something. That choice is gone. In Anthropic's words, "these are merged into a single conversation, so you don't need to decide which option better suits your task before getting started."

Claude now works out what the request needs. Ask a question and you get an answer. Ask for twelve spreadsheets to be reconciled into one and Claude goes to work on them. Same box, same conversation.

Two new things arrived with the merge. Claude Docs writes documents with you, and Claude Slides drafts presentations you can edit, present from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF. Claude Design now runs inside conversations too. Anything you make with Docs, Slides, or Design sits at a shareable link you can open on your phone.

How to tell whether you have it yet

Look at the message box. If it still shows Chat and Cowork as separate options, your account has not moved over. Anthropic is rolling this out "starting with Pro and Max plans on web, desktop, and mobile," with Team and Free plans following later, and Enterprise administrators getting at least 30 days of notice before anything changes for their users.

There is nothing to enable and nothing to install. One point worth knowing before it happens: once your account has the new experience, you cannot switch back.

Your history is not affected. Chats, tasks, projects, connectors, skills, artifacts, and files all carry over. Cowork tasks and ordinary chats now sit together under Recents instead of in separate places.

The web search toggle is gone

This is the change most likely to make you think something is broken. There is no longer a switch that turns web search on and off. Anthropic's guidance is plain: "There's no web search toggle. Claude searches the web when it helps."

So Claude decides. Ask about something that happened last week and it searches. Ask it to rewrite a paragraph and it does not. If you want current information and are not certain Claude will go looking, say so in the request. "Check the current pricing on their site" is enough.

Where Research went

Research still exists, and it is still the right tool when you want Claude to investigate something properly rather than answer from a single search. It runs multiple connected searches, decides what to look at next, and returns an answer with citations.

You start it by typing /deep-research, or with the "+" button below the message box and then Research. Bear in mind that Research is a paid feature, available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.

What moved and what stayed

The model picker is where it was, and so is the Code tab. Effort settings still sit under the model name.

One setting did move. If you had set global instructions for Cowork, they now live in Settings, under General, as "Instructions for Claude." Worth a look if you had spent time getting those right, because that is where they ended up.

A few things are not there yet. Branching a conversation from an earlier point is unavailable, and search does not reach older Cowork tasks. These read as gaps during a rollout rather than permanent decisions, but plan around them for now.

What this means if you are learning Claude

The merge removes a decision that confused people. Choosing between two modes before you understood either one was a barrier, and it is gone. That is straightforwardly good for anyone starting out.

It does create a smaller problem. Claude now decides more on your behalf, quietly. It decides whether to search, whether to build something, how much work a request deserves. When those decisions are invisible, it is harder to notice that you can influence them, and most people never learn to ask for more than they are getting. Knowing what Claude is choosing, and how to override it, is now the difference between a capable assistant and a chat window.

Conclusion

Nothing was taken away. Chat and Cowork became one place, web search became automatic, Research moved behind the "+" button, and global instructions moved into Settings. If your account still shows the tabs, you will get the update in the coming weeks, and your work will follow you when it arrives. The one habit worth forming now is asking directly for what you want, since the toggles that used to say it for you are gone.
